When I first began advising people on financial matters in 2005, it became clear to me that there were two primary threats capable of derailing the best of financial plans. The first threat was the future viability of social security in the years to come. The second threat, and the one I wish to address today, was the cost of Long-Term Health Care.
The simple fact of the matter “is that 70% of people who reach age 65 will require long-term care services at some point in their lives” (www.longtermcare.gov). What is even more evident is that long-term care (LTC) is a quality of life issue primarily for women. Christine Benz, Morningstar’s Director of Personal Finance, cites that “more than 75% percent of caregivers are women.” Not only do women most often provide care, but also “Over two-thirds (67.5%) of LTC insurance individual claim dollars are paid to women,” and women over age 65 are more likely to go to a nursing home than men by almost 3 to 1 (American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance). Now it is almost 2018, and I have exactly the same concerns about threats to financial planning as I did in 2005.
Wanting to provide my clients with the best possible service and LTC insurance options, my primary goal was to find the best broker-dealer in the country. Although I was offered jobs by both Northwestern and Genworth, as an insurance agent selling LTC, I did not want to be tied to one company. Providing clients with the best option for their individual needs without being obligated to one proprietary product was important to me. I heavily researched broker-dealers in 2008 to find the best provider of LTC in the country.
I found a gem called National/New York Long-Term Care Brokers, and they have been a partner of mine ever since. They have helped me provide clients with the best rates, from the best companies while also finding the best options for each and every client. Because of their first-rate support, I have been on the cutting edge of LTC insurance.
